William Hartnell
1963 - 1966

Hartnell was born in 1908 in the King's Cross area of London. In 1926, through admiration of Charlie Chaplin in silent films, he was lucky enough with the help of philanthropist art critic Hugh Blaker to get a job touring with Sir Frank Benson's Shakespearean Company. After several films, Hartnell appeared in the Granada TV comedy series The Army Game and the 1963 Lindsay Anderson film This Spring Life that brought him to the attention of Verity Lambert who was considering the central character in Doctor Who. After several meetings with him, she was convinced she found the Doctor. William Hartnell died in 1975.
