Jon Pertwee
1970 - 1974

Pertwee was born in 1919 in the Chelsea area of London. In 1936 he joined the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts from which he was soon expelled from. He worked on in repertory theatre and progressed to London's West End in 1938. He made his debut in films as an extra and then from 1939 onwards in speaking roles. He also worked with radio. His career was put on hold as he joined the navy when Second World War broke out. In 1946 he joined the cast of HMS Waterlogged, the Naval edition of the forces radio show Mediterranean Merry-Go-Round. In the late forties, after leaving the Navy, he joined a vaudeville troupe, appeared in music hall and made many further radio shows and films. In 1959 he was invited to front a new BBC radio series, The Navy Lark, based on his own wartime experiences. During the sixties, Pertwee worked on stage and film acting. The seventies saw him becoming best known for his work in television where he soon became the third doctor. Jon Pertwee died in 1996.
