Patrick Troughton
1966 - 1970

Troughton was born in 1920 and spent his early life in North London. During his teens, he trained at the Embassy School of Acting in Swiss Cottage. After Second World War where he served in the Royal Navy, he continued working with the Amersham Repertory Company, The Bristol Old Vic Company and the Pilgrim Players at the Mercury Theatre in Nottingham. In 1947, he broke into television and films a year later. He found himself in great demand during the fifties and sixties for his character parts that was often submerged in elaborate costume and make-up. While he was on location for the The Viking Queen in Ireland, BBC approached him about the role of Doctor Who. He eventually accepted and proved that the series could survive a change of lead actor. Patrick Troughton died in 1987.
